Flight over Port-Au-Prince, Haiti
See Haiti emergency orphan appeal and sponsor an earthquake orphan.
This video came from helicopter flight of Myriam Rodriguez, director of SOS Children's Villages Dominican Republic. Whilst we were ascertaining the feasibility of road convoys of aid from the Dominican Republic into Port au Prince, she flew the route and then over the SOS Children's Village in Santo, and other programmes some 16 kilometres from the heavily damaged capital Port-au-Prince.
The video is not a professional one, but nevertheless it conveys the atmosphere of Haiti. The team did not land but gained a general overview over the situation on the ground. As a result of the trip a first convoy of emergency aid has already arrived from the Dominican Republic into Haiti, and the Dominican government have agreed on the use of the SOS Village play ground for their emergency hospital. The water tower of the village with SOS logo is clearly visible as are the fifteen family houses laid out a bit like a modern housing estate. The SOS School is also shown as undamaged but as yet no one has even reached the social centre buildings, which are believed to be destroyed. The National Directors own house as well as our offices collapsed.
