Child Sponsorship Background from Limón, Costa Rica

Child sponsorship Limon, Costa RicaSOS Children's Village Limón

The main reason for the establishment of Costa Rica's second SOS Children's Village near Puerto Limón was the severe poverty and the large number of children under social risk in this eastern region of the country. SOS Children's Village Limón was set up on an area of about 21,000 sq.m., which is located at a distance of 3 km to the west of the centre of Limón, at a place named "Los Cocos". The infrastructure is good: supermarkets, schools, churches and medical care are within easy reach. Its official inauguration took place in March 2001. One year before, the first families had already moved into their new homes.

SOS Children's Village Limón consists of 13 family houses, an administration building, a multi-purpose hall, the village director's house and staff accommodation. In addition to that, a soccer and a basketball field have been laid out near the village. There are also large green and recreational areas for the children.

Other SOS Projects in Limón

In 2005, an SOS Social Centre replaced the former SOS Nursery at Limón. It includes a day-care centre for up to 80 babies and children both from the SOS Children's Village and its surroundings. It consists of 3 classrooms, a refectory and a playground. Furthermore, the SOS Social Centre offers special classes and counselling for parents. All these measures are meant to strengthen the families of the local community in order to avoid child abandonment.
