In Rwanda, HIV/AIDS is one of four primary causes of death among infants and mothers. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is 5% but is estimated to be more than double that among women. UNICEF estimates that there are more than 160,000 orphans as a result of HIV/AIDS, which is about one fifth of all orphans. Rwanda is still recovering from the affects of the civil war that devastated the country in the 1990s.

SOS Children in Rwanda

SOS Children has been working in Rwanda since 1979 and has three SOS Children's Villages. In addition to their work with orphaned and vulnerable children, SOS Children actively works through its SOS Medical and Social Centres to support families affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition SOS Children runs "anti-AIDS clubs" in its schools to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
