Notes |
The Journal written by Paul Fréart de Chantelou, which records Bernini's visit to Paris in 1665, describes in detail the gestation of his marble bust of Louis XIV, which took forty days to create. Berninin's design of the Palais du Louvre failed to please Louis XIV. Nevertheless the king showered Bernini with honours and commissioned his portrait bust from him. This is one of the few portraits for which Louis XIV agreed to pose: he allowed thirteen sittings. |
